Dead Man Walking (Tim Robbins, 1995) spacer Dead Man Walking (Tim Robbins, 1995)
BY: Andrew H. Trotter, Jr.
The power of this film lies in the fact that Robbins does not slip into maudlin preaching about the evils of the death penalty or the inhumanity of prison life or any one of a thousand other “messages” he could have made this film about.

Three Colors Trilogy: Blue (1993), White (1994), Red (1994) (Krzysztof Kieslowski)

BY: Denis Haack
Sometimes if the film is good enough and its story told well, a character or image will lodge in the imagination like a splinter, making us wonder and think, pondering its meaning.

BY: Denis Haack
Never have I seen dead bodies treated with such deep respect. Never have I seen such a physical act help grieving people mourn their loss.

BY: R. Greg Grooms
How do you feel about people who are certain? Do you find them attractive, admirable, encouraging? Often the attractiveness of certainty depends on who embodies it.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry, 2004) spacer Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry, 2004)
BY: Andrew H. Trotter, Jr.
The genius-level writing in this script is well-supported by Gondry’s sure-handed direction and Carrey and Winslet are brilliant in this engrossing film.

spacer This year spring came late to southern Minnesota, and when it arrived it brought chilly temperatures, cloudy skies, and lots of rain. Whether it is because of these factors or something entirely different I don't know, but 2013 has turned out to be The Year of the Morel. If you have never sampled these delicious mushrooms, you are in for a treat. We've found them on more than one walk in the woods, and so feel we have had a special opportunity to experience one of the wonders of creation.

Morels, goldfinches, a well crafted film, an iris bursting into bloom, a chance for an unhurried conversation in a safe place--such glimmers of hope help us flourish as persons in this broken world. These are the sort of things we are concerned with at Ransom. Thanks for visiting.
