Why do you review movies in Critique and on your website?
Missionaries have long known that in order to understand a people, you need to listen to their stories. Think, for example, of Don Richardson’s remarkable book, Peace Child, and how the opening to the gospel came when the missionaries heard about their belief in the child who could bring an end to tribal warfare. In our stories, our deepest values and fears, doubts and convictions are both expressed and passed on to the next generation. When I tell my children the story of Christian martyrs, for example, I am not simply entertaining them. I am also telling them what we believe is worth living—and dying—for.
In our fragmented and broken culture, the stories of the postmodern generation are found primarily in the movies.
